Monkeys and apes are under threat

Their habitat is being destroyed
Rainforests are being lost to fire, agriculture, logging and mining.  When the forests disappear, so do the monkeys.

They are hunted and killed
In many countries monkeys and apes are killed for food. The trade in their meat, called ‘bushmeat’, is now recognised as the greatest threat to many species, especially in Africa.

Many face a miserable life in captivity
Primates are cruelly used in circuses, chained and imprisoned to attract tourists and are still exploited for biomedical research. The trade in wild caught primates devastates whole populations. For every survivor, ten others may die.

Why should we care?

  •  Monkeys and apes are our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.

  •  Primates are sensitive, social and intelligent. It is not ethically justifiable to allow them to suffer under human hands.

  •  Saving primates can help save rainforests, which are one of the most important ecosystems on earth.
